As the situation in San Bernardino unfolds, police admit there are still a lot of unknown variables. One thing, however, is clear: the massacre, in which three armed men stormed a San Bernardino civic center and killed at least 14 people, is "at a minimum" an act of domestic terrorism.

On Wednesday afternoon, roughly three hours after the shootings began, San Bernardino police held a press conference to release the known details of the assault.

"Up to three people had entered the building and opened fire on people inside the building," Chief Jarrod Burguan said, adding: "Upwards of 14 people that are dead, and upwards of 14 people that are injured."

Burguan went on to tell reporters that the shooters identities and motive are not yet known. "We do not have any identification on who those suspects are, and we do not know what the motive is for the shooting at this point."

When asked if the assault could be considered a terrorist attack, Burguan said there's no information to indicate it was a terrorist attack "in the way people probably think about it," but added:

"Obviously, at minimum, we have a domestic terrorist-type situation that occurred here [...] The only thing I'm comfortable saying at this point is that the information we have is that they came prepared to do what they did as if they were on a mission."

The tragic incident follows a number of other high-profile mass shootings in the United States. Most recently, a gunman opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado. Allegedly, the shooter was heard saying "no more baby parts" before going on the shooting spree—a possible reference to a now debunked viral video which purports to depict Planned Parenthood officials negotiating the sale of fetal tissue.
